Cause of Excessive Sweating

The exact cause of excessive sweating is still unknown, most experts now believe that the main cause of excessive sweating is not due to stress or anxiety, but because of a familial genetic of the sweat glands to over-activity to stimulation by the sympathetic nervous system is the main underlying cause for excessive sweating, it is the Thoracic Sympathetic Ganglion Chain, which runs along the vertebra of the spine inside the chest cavity.

Further explanation of causes of excessive sweating can be classified into three categories; generalized hyperhidrosis, Regional Hyperhidrosis and focal hyperhidrosis.

1.Generalized Hyperhidrosis: Generalized hyperhidrosis can appear in the entire body which can happen on the face, trunk and extremities. and is usually part of an underlying condition, most often an infectious, endocrine or neurologic disorder. It also can be caused by some medications, drug abuse, heart problems, lung failure, fever, and metabolic disturbances as seen in thyroid over activity or diabetes, neurological diseases like Parkinsonism. In those cases most of the patients do have some other systemic problems such as obesity, febrile illnesses or some sort of neoplastic disease or some endocrinological disorders (thyroid glands, etc). A search for a specific reason to excessive sweating in general can be long.

2. Focal Hyperhidrosis: Primary Focal hyperhidrosis is idiopathic, which means excessive sweating that is not caused by medical condition, nor is it a side effect of medications. occurring in otherwise healthy people. This type of sweating always occurs on some specific areas of the body (described as focal areas), most often the palms, armpits, soles or face. Almost 3% of the general population, largely people aged between 25 and 64 years, experience hyperhidrosis. The condition carries a substantial psychological and social burden, since it interferes with daily activities. However, patients rarely seek a physician’s help because many are unaware that they have a treatable medical disorder. Early detection and management of hyperhidrosis can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. There are various topical, systemic, surgical and nonsurgical treatments available with efficacy rates greater than 90%–95%. This type of sweating always occurs on very specific areas of the body (described as focal areas) and is usually relatively “symmetric” meaning that both the left and right sides of the body are affected similarly. The most common focal areas are the hands, feet, underarm, and head or face.
